Letters, 1789-1801.

Sixteen manuscript letters from Theodore Sedgwick, U.S. representative and senator from Mass., to Peter Van Schaack of Kinderhook, NY, 1789-1801. The letters were written from New York and Philadelphia where Sedgwick was serving in Congress, and from his home in Stockbridge. The bulk of the letters relate to pending legislation and Congressional business, in particular relations between the president and Congress and Jay's Treaty with Great Britain. The collection also includes one letter from Van Schaack to Sedgwick and a few miscellaneous fragments relating to legal cases.

Theodore Sedgwick (May 9, 1746 – January 24, 1813) was an American attorney, politician and jurist, who served in elected state government and as a Delegate to the Continental Congress, a U.S. Representative, and a United States Senator from Massachusetts.
